BACKGROUND continued
Another important component of oral anatomy is the gingiva (gums). The primary function of the gingiva is to support the teeth. Healthy gums have the following characteristics: • Pale pink in color • Form a scalloped outline around the teeth • Firm in texture • Do not bleed while eating, brushing, or flossing • Have a probing depth of 3mm or less The gingiva can be classified as lingual (facing the tongue) or buccal (facing the cheek) and marginal (along the wide part of the tooth) or proximal (between teeth). This is important to understand, as clinical studies often refer to such sites during data analysis. Whole mouth healthy refers to having healthy tissue, both teeth and gingiva, throughout the entire mouth. Very few patients present whole mouth healthy as defined by a dental professional, yet most patients do not receive a recommendation for mouth rinse as a daily adjunct to their home care routine. This is primarily because, while most dental professionals acknowledge that patients with isolated areas of inflammation are not “fully healthy,” they tend to reserve mouthrinse recommendations until a more serious progression of the disease occurs. This creates an opportunity for significant brand share growth. If we can secure an understanding of “what healthy looks like” and then agree to recommend adjunctive therapy for patients who are not “healthy,” we can significantly expand the number of recommendations made.
